In our world today, I am sure by now you’ve heard the term life coach? If you haven’t heard about it, let me explain. A life coach is someone who comes along side us to help us reach our goals, encourage us to overcome our fears, and equip us in our journey called ‘life’.
These coaches are like having a wise and trusted friend who is on our side spurring us on to do better and to grow.
I can’t help but apply this same principle to our role as wives (or wives-in-training for the single women). But what’s even more helpful than having just any coach, is having a coach that will encourage, equip, and inspire a wife from a biblical perspective so she can be an excellent wife!
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. Proverbs 31:10 (ESV)
When you read the Word of God you’ll not find the word ‘coach’ in there to help you in your most important relationship, second to Jesus Christ. What you’ll read is this,
The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5
As Christian women, we often read this passage and think of the term- mentor.
But it seems to me that not a whole lot of mentoring in regards to being a Godly wife is taking place within the Body of Christ. Most wives don’t feel equipped for this role. What society portrays to us in how we should act and treat our husbands is certainly contrary to what the Bible has to say. Thus, it’s easy for us to flounder in this position especially if we didn’t have any Godly role models showing us what an excellent wife looks like.
And it’s because of this that my heart breaks.
No bride walks down the aisle on her wedding day in hopes that her marital union would one day become cold and platonic. Nor does she have aspirations of having her future children living in a broken home because she and her husband got a divorce.
Broken homes don’t happen because the children are broken. Broken homes happen because the marriage is broken.
It’s amazing to me how much time and emphasis a woman places on the planning and celebration of a wedding, yet not invest in her role as a wife.
We invest in all sorts of things. We’ll go to school to learn how to become a teacher, an accountant, an engineer, a scientist, etc. We will also spend time and money learning certain trades and skills. Some futher their education through advanced college courses, others will take classes to learn a new hobby like ballroom dancing, how to start a blog, or become more equipped for ministry purposes. Yet, many times we neglect the need to grow as a Godly wife.
Out of all the celebrations in life, whether it’s a baby shower, a birthday, a graduation, an anniversary, or a what-have-you, it’s the wedding that is the most important and lavishly celebrated event- whether it’s your wedding or a wedding that you’re attending. Even society holds the wedding celebration in high honor! We read in the tabloids how much the celebrities spent on their weddings and we even watch the weddings of royalties/celebrities on t.v!
Yet for some reason, once the ceremony is over and the decorations and gifts are put away, and the newness of the relationship wears off, our role as a wife is not nearly important like it once was. Add kids to the mix, stir in some financial strains, trials, unmet needs, and the next thing you know, your marriage is not what you had hoped for!
You can’t help but wonder what happened?
This is where Biblical Wife Coaching comes in.
